Der Geist der Reise

On the canals of Amphawa, boats laden with tropical fruits glide between the stilts while the aroma of grilled skewers perfumes the wooden quays. The floating market comes alive at dawn, revealing an authentic Thailand far from the usual tourist circuits.

This journey crosses the lesser-known provinces of the kingdom: the secret mangroves of Mae Klong, the emerald waterfalls of Erawan with seven levels, the weaving workshops of Phatthalung where the art of reed weaving is perpetuated, then the crystal-clear waters of Koh Jum facing the Andaman Sea. Between Kanchanaburi and its war remnants, Lake Thale Noi at sunrise and vibrant Bangkok, each stage reveals a different face of the peninsula.

This land was the cradle of the Kingdom of Siam, where Buddhist traditions blend with Malay and Chinese influences. From temples carved in teak wood to "Nang Thalung" shadow theatres, cultural heritage permeates every encounter. A journey that leaves the salty taste of sea spray and the serenity of lotus gardens.

On the Floating Markets of Amphawa

AmphawaGuide francophoneDriver

This morning, we set out for the small floating market of Tah kah, rich in colors and scents. A real immersion in Thai local life.

Then, excursion to a local palm sugar industry.

Local curiosity, Mae Klong Railway Market, where 4 times a day, fruit and vegetable stalls hastily fold up as the train passes through the market.

Next, we head off to discover life in the mangroves. By boat, we explore this fragile ecosystem. During our excursion, we discover the way of life of the fishermen (here, cockle fishing is done from a surfboard) and visit a shellfish farm.

Lunch featuring local specialties.

As night falls, take a boat trip on the canal. Our boatman picks us up from the docks, and we set off on a mini-excursion hunting for fireflies that illuminate the waters.

This evening, we head to the waterfront to taste the local flavors of the Floating Market, which operates on weekend evenings. Along the canals, many locals come to dine. Like them, we order our small dishes directly from each boat: stir-fried noodle dish, a few shrimp or squid skewers, or why not pre-cut mangoes.

Discovering the Region

PhattalungGuide francophone

We make a jump to the local market of Kwanjai Papai Sansook, which takes place every Saturday 20km from the city. Very local atmosphere, in a magnificent setting shaded by huge bamboos. We will then go for our lunch (not included) at Pa Pai Sang Suk Market for a typical atmosphere guaranteed.

Sunrise over Thale Noi Lake

PhattalungGuide francophone

Meet in the morning at dawn, before sunrise (probably between 05:30 and 6 AM) for exploration of the lake and Thale Noi park (''small sea'' in Thai), a natural bird reserve. At sunrise, you will discover water buffalo crossing the lake waters, then a little further into the lagoon, you will observe various birds taking flight at our arrival. During this crossing of approximately one and a half hours, we will pass along the large traditional fishing nets with counterweights located just at the river mouth. Return to the hotel for breakfast.

Then, we head to the river where a large part of the village community gathers on weekends to have lunch and spend the afternoon with family. Lunch (excluding beverages) will be included - a meal prepared by the ladies of the community - we can then plan to buy a few drinks on the way before arriving.

We recommend bringing light swimwear and a change of clothes - knowing that there are no changing cabins on site. Since this is - like all of southern Thailand - a region with a Muslim majority, and moreover Thais are generally very modest, ladies who wish to swim may want to bring a sarong (simple cotton cloth that you will find at the market - batik or printed textiles being a specialty of the South and nearby Malaysia).

Day with a driver.

At the end of the day, meet at the Chalerm Prakiat Grand Bridge to watch the sunset over the lake, offering in particular a view of water buffalo farms. Driver only.

Discovery of Bangkok

BangkokGuide francophone

Morning departure to reach the dock and take public boat-buses and head towards the center, on the right bank and the Pak Khlong Talat flower market district.

Then, on foot, you reach Wat Pho, one of Bangkok's oldest temples, renowned for its peaceful atmosphere and elegant pavilions. You discover the impressive Reclining Buddha, an iconic figure of the place, as well as the inner courtyards dotted with stupas and refined decorative details.

Then, you cross the river aboard a small boat to reach Wat Arun, the famous "Temple of Dawn", standing on the right bank. Upon arrival, you admire its spectacular central prang, finely decorated with porcelain mosaics and floral patterns that glisten in the light.

Visit of Wat Traimit or the Golden Buddha Temple, and the small but very interesting Yaowarat Chinatown Heritage Museum, which traces the history of Chinese immigration to Bangkok.

Cruise aboard a private traditional "long-tail" boat on the Chao Praya river, one of the country's most important waterways and the lifeblood of Bangkok. As you glide along the water, you discover the "Venice of the Orient," with peaceful klongs, stilt houses, and small temples hidden along the riverbanks.
